Morfologia modifica

  • Els mascles poden assolir 110 cm de llargària total i 1.690 g de pes.[2][3]

Alimentació modifica

Menja una àmplia gamma de peixos i invertebrats, però, principalment, crustacis pelàgics (com ara, gambes, amfípodes i Cumacea), cefalòpodes i peixos de la família Myctophidae.[2]

Depredadors modifica

És depredat per Sebastes fasciatus, Sebastes mentella[4] i Molva dipterygia.[5]

Hàbitat modifica

És un peix d'aigües profundes que viu entre 180-2600 m de fondària,[6] tot i que, normalment, ho fa entre 400-1200.[7]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

Es troba a l'Atlàntic nord (Groenlàndia, Bahames, illa de Baffin[8][6][9] i des d'Islàndia[10] i Noruega[11] fins a l'Àfrica del Nord).[2][12]

Longevitat modifica

Pot arribar a viure 54 anys.[13]

Ús comercial i gastronòmic modifica

És capturat i congelat per a ésser fregit o enfornat. També és emprat per a fer farina de peix.[14]

Estat de conservació modifica

És objecte de sobrepesca a l'Atlàntic nord.[2]
