"White Pearl Granite" - monzogranite from the Late Paleozoic of Spain.

Medium gray = quartz White & very pale pinkish-gray = feldspar Black = amphibole

"Granite" in the decorative stone trade is any relatively hard rock that will take a fine polish, regardless of mineralogy or chemistry or geologic origin.

"Granites" turn out to be felsic to mafic intrusive igneous rocks (granite, granodiorite, porphyritic granite, rapakivi granite, orbicular granite, pegmatitic granite, graphic granite, anorthosite, monzonite, gabbro, norite, gabbronorite, dolerite, diabase, charnockite, etc.) and high-grade to very high-grade metamorphic rocks (metanorthosite, gneiss, metaconglomerate, amphibolite, quartzite, granulite, migmatite).

True granites (= monzogranites & syenogranites & porphyritic varieties) make up most of the commercial granite trade. Countless varieties are quarried around the world.

Shown here is "White Pearl Granite" from Spain, also known as "Blanco Perla Granite". The rock is from a Mississippian to Early Permian (284 to 345 Ma) intrusive complex formed during the Hercynian Orogeny in western Europe (= a Pangaea supercontinent formation event). The specific intrusion is the La Cabrera Granite, which consists of monzogranite, leucogranite, and biotite granite.

The light paver which covers most of the lobby floor and the exterior entryway is a more typical one-mica (biotite) granite that was quarried from Madrid, Spain.

Geologic unit & age: La Cabrera Granite, Spanish Central System, Pennsylvanian to Early Permian, 288 to 310 Ma

Provenance: attributed to a quarry at Bustarviejo, north of Madrid, Castilla, central Spain (if accurate, there are granite quarries southeast of the town of Bustarviejo - e.g., at 40° 50' 14.76" North latitude, 3° 39' 48.97" West longitude)
