Gymnothorax és un gènere de peixos de la família dels murènids i de l'ordre dels anguil·liformes.[1]

Etimologia modifica

Gymnothorax prové dels mots grecs gymnos (nu, no vestit) i thorax, -akos (tòrax)[2]

Morfologia modifica

Les aletes dorsal i anal es troben cobertes de pell. Absència d'aletes pectorals. Mandíbula inferior recta (la boca tanca completament en totes les espècies del Pacífic oriental, llevat de Gymnothorax verrilli). Dents molt esmolades i, només algunes, allargades. Les obertures branquials presenten, normalment, la mateixa coloració del cos.[3]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

Es troba a les aigües tropicals i temperades càlides de tots els oceans.[3]
