Morfologia modifica

Pot assolir 91 cm de longitud total,[3] encara que la seua mida normal és de 50.[4][5][6]

Reproducció modifica

A la conca inferior del riu Colorado té lloc principalment des de finals del gener fins a l'abril (rarament, fins al maig o el juny), quan la temperatura de l'aigua assoleix 11-21 °C.[7][8][9][10]

Alimentació modifica

Menja algues, crustacis planctònics i larves d'insectes aquàtics. Al llac Mohave (Arizona i Nevada), els adults es nodreixen principalment de crustacis, diatomees, algues filamentoses i detritus.[11][12]

Depredadors modifica

Als Estats Units és depredat per Lepomis cyanellus, Cyprinella lutrensis, Pimephales promelas, Richardsonius balteatus, Ictalurus punctatus i Pylodictis olivaris.[13][14][15]

Hàbitat modifica

És un peix d'aigua dolça, demersal, potamòdrom[16] i de clima temperat (37°N-34°N).[5]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

Es troba als Estats Units: històricament, s'estenia a la conca del riu Colorado[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] des de Wyoming i Colorado (els Estats Units) fins a la Baixa Califòrnia i Sonora (Mèxic),[26] però actualment només es troba al mateix riu al seu pas pel Gran Canyó[27] i els llacs Mead, Mohave[28][29][30] i Havasu, incloent-hi els estats d'Arizona,[31] Califòrnia,[32][33] Colorado,[34][35] Nevada, Nou Mèxic,[36] Utah,[37][38][39][40] Wyoming i la Nació Navajo.[41][5][4][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50]

Estat de conservació modifica

Apareix a la Llista Vermella de la UICN[51][52][53][54][55][56][57] i les seues principals amenaces són la introducció d'espècies exòtiques[58][59][60] i les alteracions humanes de l'hàbitat riberenc (com ara, la construcció de preses).[61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][50]
