Del grec anarrhichesis (pujar, l'acció de pujar).[2]

Descripció modifica

Alimentació modifica

Són depredadors bentònics, els quals es nodreixen d'invertebrats de closca dura (com ara, cloïsses, equinoderms i crustacis).[4]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica modifica

Són peixos principalment demersals, els quals viuen a les aigües fredes (de somes a moderadament fondes) de la plataforma i el talús continentals de l'Atlàntic nord (Spitsbergen, Nova Terra, la mar de Barentsz,[5][6][7] la mar de Noruega,[7][8] la mar Blanca, Escandinàvia,[9] la mar Bàltica,[10] la mar Cantàbrica, la Mediterrània nord-occidental[11] -com ara, el golf de Gènova-,[12][13] les illes Britàniques,[14][15][16][17] les illes Shetland, les illes Fèroe, Islàndia,[18] Groenlàndia[19][20][21][22][23][24] i, ocasionalment, el nord de la mar del Nord[25] i Skagerrak),[26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] l'Atlàntic nord-occidental (des de l'Àrtic[36][37][38] fins a Nova Escòcia, Terranova,[39] el sud de la península del Labrador, Cap Cod -Massachusetts, els Estats Units- i, rarament, Nova Jersey)[40][41][42][43] i del Pacífic nord (des de Hokkaido -el Japó-,[44] la mar del Japó[45][46] i la mar d'Okhotsk[47][48] fins a la mar de Bering,[49][50][51][52][53] les illes Krenitzin, l'Àrtic canadenc[54][55][36] i el sud de Califòrnia).[56]
