Es va graduar en arqueologia i antropologia l'any 1962 a Cambridge. Entre 1968 i 1970 va dirigir excavacions a Sitagroi i el 1972 a Milos, Grècia.

El 1973 Renfrew va publicar Before Civilisation, the Radiocarbon Revolution and Prehistoric Europe (Abans de la civilització: La revolució del carboni-14 i l'Europa prehistòrica).

El1990 publicà Archaeology and Language: The Puzzle of Indo-European Origins (Arqueologia i llenguatge: el trencaclosques dels orígens protoindoeuropeus.

Renfrew és l'autor de la hipòtesi d'Anatòlia segons la qual els indoeuropeus es van estendre pacíficament per tota Europa arran de la revolució agrícola neolítica.
