Morfologia modifica

Mesura fins a 97 cm de llargària. Cap aplanat amb crestes i la boca obliqua i cap amunt. Aletes dorsal i anal unides amb la caudal. Aletes pectorals petites i absència de les pelvianes.[10][11][12]

Ecologia modifica

És un peix marí, demersal (fins als 110 m de fondària)[13] i de clima temperat (55°N-39°N), el qual viu a l'Atlàntic occidental: els fons tous i fangosos des de Nova Escòcia (Quebec)[14][15] i el sud de la península del Labrador (Canadà)[16][17][18][19] fins a Nova Jersey (Estats Units).[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31]<ref"> Robins, C.R., R.M. (20):183 p.</ref>[4][12][32][33] Menja principalment fauna bentònica que troba al voltant del seu cau (com ara, amfípodes, poliquets, gambetes i peixets).[34] Als Estats Units és depredat per Raja radiata i Sebastes fasciatus.[35] És inofensiu per als humans.[12]
