Tanmateix, amb l'avenç de la [[taxonomia dels mamífers]] i el desenvolupament de les [[filogènia molecular|anàlisis moleculars]], els [[mastologia|mastòlegs]] s'adonaren que el clade Artiodactyla, tal com era definit aleshores, era [[parafilètic]].
Els primers intents de fer quadrar la [[taxonomia]] amb els nous descobriments consistiren a abandonar el clade Artiodactyla i crear un grup que englobés tant els «artiodàctils tradicionals» com els cetacis.
