Segons l'[[Ethnologue]] té dos dialectes: el Karakalpak del nord-est i el Karakalpak del sud-oest.<ref name=Ethnologe /> [[Karl Heinrich Menges]] menciona un possible tercer dialecte parlat a la [[Vall de Ferganà]]. El dialecte del sud-oest es caracteritza pel so <nowiki> [č] en lloc del [š] </nowiki> del dialecte del nord-est.

Fins al 1928 el karakalpak va utilitzar l'[[alfabet àrab]] i la seva variant de l'[[Alfabet persa]] per ser reperesentat en l'escriptura. A partir de 1928 va utilitzar l'alfabet llatí (amb caràcters addicionals)k fins al 1940. A partir d'aquesta data es va introduir l'ús de l'alfabet ciríl·lic. from 1928 to 1940, after which [[Cyrillic script|Cyrillic]] was introduced. Following Uzbekistan's independence in 1991, the decision was made to drop Cyrillic and revert to the Latin alphabet. Whilst the use of Latin script is now widespread in [[Tashkent]], its introduction into Karakalpakstan remains gradual. The Cyrillic and Latin alphabets are shown below with their equivalent representations in the IPA. Cyrillic letters with no representation in the Latin alphabet are marked with asterisks.
Encara que l'ús de l'alfabet llatí, s'ha estès a [[Taixkent]] (la capital d'Uzbekistan), a Karakalpakistán la introducció d'aquest alfabet està essent molt més lenta.
