Thompson también indica que en Hanói, los diptongos, "''iê''" /iɜ/, "''ươ''" /ɯɜ/, "''uô''" /uɜ/, pueden pronunciarse como /ie/, /ɯəː/, y /uo/, respectivamente (según los que sugieren la pronunciación por fonemas), pero delante de /k/ y /ŋ/ siempre se pronuncian /iɜ/, /ɯɜ/, /uɜ/. Nguyễn sólo dice que siempre se pronuncian como: /iɜ/, /ɯɜ/, /uɜ/.
