El xona compta amb cinc vocals (a, e, i, o, u), sons xiulats i nombroses africades, característiques de la fonètica de la regió. La seva gramàtica va estandarditzar-se als anys 50 i destaca per l'ús de [[prefix]]os nominals (la flexió es fa més amb prefixos que sufixos) i per la varietat de modes verbals, que permeten expressar diferents matisos de l'actitud del parlant cap a l'acció del verb. S'escriu en alfabet llatí.
