Hi té poques [[espècieespècies]]s d'animals i vegetals, però, en canvi, llurs [[població (biologia)|poblacions]] hi són molt nombroses (especialment les d'[[porífer|esponges]], les quals sembla que són tan abundants com en els mars de [[clima tropical]]).
