Més enllà del seu significat iconogràfic en la que queden representades les vuit beatituds, aquestes escenes han estat també interpretades tenint en compte el donant, Joos Vijd. Així, els ''«Cavallers de Crist»'' es relacionarien amb el seu pare, Clais, que pertanyia a la [[noblesa]], i el suport que va donar a [[Lluís II de Flandes]] durant la revolta de Gant el 1381. Els «pelegrins» estarien liderats pel seu germà Cristòfor, a més de fer referència a l'hospici per a pelegrins creat per Vijd. Els «ermitans» farien referència a la [[cartoixa de Rooigem]] apadrinada per Vijd i lloc on estava enterrat el seu pare.
