19 November of 2005: Wikipèdia reaches 20.000 entries in Catalan.

At this time Wikipèdia in Catalan, or Valencian (http://ca.wikipedia.org), has already passed the mark of 20.000 entries and continues growing. The Catalan Wikipèdia is part of a world-wide effort with the goal of creating an encyclopedia of quality, for general use and for free distribution (see www.wikipedia.org), through a network of freely participating volunteers from all over the world participating for free. <!-- what is meant with "free": at no cost, or independent/without censorship? --> The Wikipèdia contents are under the terms of the licence GFDL licence. This means that everybody can use the articles freely, they can be copied, edited and distributed, provided two requirements are met: the source is mentioned and the conditions of use follow the same licence (GFDL) or a compatible licence.

The Wikipedia project is really international and multilingual: there are more than 110 editions in different languages which work autonomously. Globally, they contain nearly 2'5 millions articles.

The Viquipèdia (in Catalan) was born in March 2001 and was the second version to see the light of day after the Wikipèdia in English. During this time it has consolidated its place among the twenty largest Wikipedia languages with regard to the number of articles. On November 16, 2004 it reached the 10.000 entries milestone, and within a year, the Viquipèdia in Catalan has doubled the number of articles, reaching the current figure of 20.000. Not only this; in general the quality of the articles has also increased (for example, the medium size of the entries and the number of times they have been edited), the Main Page has been reworked, our Tavern has a new look, a bunch of "viquiprojectes" to improve certain areas of knowledge have been installed, the "fortnight entry" has been launched, etc. But there is still a lot to do: we will launch the viquiportals, new ways to understand the world of the Viquipèdia, we will create new viquiprojectes and new entries that will help one of the great references of wisdom for us to acting as thismake Viquipèdia in our language. <!-- "that will help one of the great references of wisdom for us to acting as this Viquipèdia in our language.": this is malformed English, I cannot understand what it is supposed to mean. -->

All this has been possible thanks to the remarkable increase of contributors this year. In the last months we have had, on average, 314 wiquipedists contributing actively. But they size up many more! <!--are (Whatstill is this suposed to mean?) -->needed! Many "important" entries still remain to be done, and many of those that already exist are far from the standard of quality that we would like. However, the viquipèdiaViquipèdia is already a useful encyclopedia that can be used in an individual or collective way at home, at schools or at work.

Everybody can contribute to Viquipèdia. Any person with a connection to the Internet can create new entries or edit those that already exist. You can help the project by creating or editing entries in the subjects you are interested in. Have you checked out if there are already entries about your village or region, your profession or your interests already? It is not necessary to be an expert to collaboratecontribute in theto Viquipèdia: any constructive collaborationcontribution is welcome, even if it is only an orthographic correction. You can create entriestotally againnew entries, or you can adapt them from other sources, wheneverprovided you respect the author's copyright.
