At this time WikipèdiaWikipedia in Catalan, or Valencian (http://ca.wikipedia.org), has already passed the mark of 20.000 entries and continues growing. The Catalan Wikipèdia''Viquipèdia'' is part of a world-wide effort with the goal of creating an encyclopedia of quality, for general use and for free distribution (see www.wikipedia.org), through a network of freely participating volunteers from all over the world. The WikipèdiaWikipedia contents are under the terms of the [[GFDL]] licence. This means that everybody can use the articles freely, they can be copied, edited and distributed, provided two requirements are met: the source is mentioned and the conditions of use follow the same licence (GFDL) or a compatible licence.

The Wikipedia project is really international and multilingual: there are more than 110 editions in different languages which work autonomously. Globally, they contain nearly 2'.5 millions articles.

''Viquipèdia'' (in Catalan) was born in March [[2001]] and was the second version to see the light of day after the WikipèdiaWikipedia in English. During this time it has consolidated its place among the twenty largest Wikipedia languages with regard to the number of articles. On [[16 de novembre|November 16]], [[2004]] it reached the 10.,000 entries milestone, and within a year, ''Viquipèdia'' in Catalan has doubled the number of articles, reaching the current figure of 20.,000. Not only this;, but also in general the quality of the articles has also increased (for example, the medium size of the entries and the number of times they have been edited), the Main Page has been reworked, our Tavern has a new look, a bunch of "viquiprojectes" (WikiProjects) to improve certain areas of knowledge have been installed, the "fortnight entry" has been launched, etc. But there is still a lot to do: we will launch the ''viquiportals'', new ways to understand the world of ''Viquipèdia'', we will create new ''viquiprojectes'' and new entries that will help us to make ''Viquipèdia'' one of the great references of wisdom in our language.

Everybody can contribute to ''Viquipèdia''. Any person with a connection to the Internet can create new entries or edit those that already exist. You can help the project by creating or editing entries in the subjects you are interested in. Have you checked out if there are already entries about your village or region, your profession or your interests? It is not necessary to be an expert to contribute to ''Viquipèdia'': any constructive contribution is welcome, even if it is only an orthographic correction. You can create totally new entries, or you can adapt them from other sources, provided you respect the author's copyright.
