Descripció modifica

  • Pot arribar a fer 70 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 50).
  • 10-11 espines i 13-15 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 3 espines i 12-14 radis tous a l'anal.
  • És gris amb les aletes dorsal i caudal fosques.[3][4][5][6]

Alimentació modifica

Els exemplars de fins a 5 cm es nodreixen de petits crustacis. Els adults són carnívors durant l'estiu i la tardor, mentre que a l'hivern mengen Endarachne binghamiae.[7][8]

Hàbitat modifica

És un peix marí, associat als esculls,[9] oceanòdrom[10] i de clima tropical (30°N-28°S) que viu entre 1 i 24 m de fondària.[3]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

Es troba des del mar Roig i l'Àfrica Oriental[11][12] fins a la badia d'Algoa (Sud-àfrica), les illes Hawaii, les Tuamotu i l'illa de Rapa (illes Australs).[3][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53]

Costums modifica

És bentopelàgic.[54]

Observacions modifica

És inofensiu per als humans i bo com a aliment.[3][7]
