Els quiasmodòntids (Chiasmodontidae) constitueixen una família de peixos marins oceànics[1] pertanyent a l'ordre dels perciformes.[2]

Etimologia modifica

Chiasmodontidae prové dels mots grecs chiasma (creu) i odous (dent, dents).[3]

Descripció modifica

Cos allargat i moderadament comprimit. Pell nua o amb espínules. 6-7 radis branquiòstegs. Dents llargues, en bandes de 3 a 5, presents als palatins i presents o absents al vòmer. Premaxil·la i maxil·lar allargats, prims i fermament fusionats. Premaxil·la amb l'extrem davanter expandit a nivell dorsal i divergent vers els costats. Dues aletes dorsals: la primera, curta, amb 9-13 espines i la segona amb 18-29 radis. Aleta anal llarga amb una espina i amb 17-29 radis tous. Aletes pectorals amb 9-15 radis. Aletes pelvianes amb 1 espina i 5 radis tous. Aleta caudal forcada. 33-48 vèrtebres. El gènere Pseudoscopelus té fotòfors. Tenen diverses adaptacions morfològiques relacionades amb la deglució de preses grosses i els seus hàbitats a grans fondàries: entre d'altres, la reducció d'alguns ossos i músculs, boques i estómacs amb força distensibilitat, canvis en la dentició i neuromasts superficials al cap i la resta del cos.[1][4][5][6]
