Biografia modifica

William Phillips (nom artístic Tully Marshall) va néixer a Nevada City el 1864 i es va educar en una escola privada a Santa Clara (Califòrnia).[1] Als 5 anys va fer la primera aparició en el teatre quan va substituir un actor infantil en una companyia itinerant que passava per la seva ciutat.[1] Va estudiar enginyeria i fou contractat per fer d’enginyer però decidir abandonar la feina per fer d’actor.[2] El seu debut oficial, però, va ser al Winter Garden de San Francisco el 8 de març de 1883 en l’obra “Saratoga” de Bronson Howard. Era cosí del dramaturg Richard Walton Tully i això el va adoptar el nom artístic de Tully Marshall.[2] La següent temporada va unir-se a la companyia teatral del Tivoli a Sacramento. En les següents temporades va actuar per la costa del Pacífic amb diferents companyies, com les de Rose Wood, James M. Ward, Jeffreys Lewis i Long & Mott entre altres.[1] També va actuar amb Modjeska i amb Fannie Davenport.

El 1897 va fer un viatge per diferents països d’Europa per estudiar els seus mètodes teatrals. En retornar als Estats Units va ser contractat per la companyia de Charles Frohman actuant en obres com “Never Again”, “On and Off”, “Hearts are Trumps”, “The Outer Girl”, “The Little Princess”, etc. Posteriorment va exercir com a director teatral o com a actor principal de diferents companyies arreu del país amb peces com “Charley’s Aunt” o “Nit de reis” de Shakespeare.(REF1) Marshall va gaudir d’una carrera ininterrompuda als escenaris fins al 1914.[2] Durant aquest temps, es va enamorar d'una companya de repartiment, Marion Neiswanger, el nom artístic de la qual era Marion Fairfax, i els dos es van casar.[2] El matrimoni durà fins a la mort de l’actor.

Fou contractat per la companyia cinematogràfica All Star i el seu debut cinematogràfic es produí el 24 de gener de 1914 a la pel·lícula “Paid in Full”, tenia quasi 50 anys. Ràpidament es va guanyar la reputació d’intèrpret de cinema fiable i versàtil, que el va fer treballar amb moltes de les figures del cinema mut de Hollywood en rols de personatges secundaris de caràcter. Es poden esmentar Norma Talmadge a “The Devil’s Needle” (1916), Seena Owen a “Martha’s Vindication” (1916), Cecil B. DeMille a “Joan the Woman” (1916) i “The Squaw Man” (1918), Jesse Lasky a “Unconquerers” (1917), Douglas Fairbanks a “A Modern Musketeer” (1917), D. W. Griffith a “Intolerance” (1916), Lon Chaney a “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1923), Erich von Stroheim a “Queen Kelly” (1929) o James Cruze a “The Covered Wagon” (1923). L’arribada del sonor no l’afectà i continuà treballant per als principals estudis.[3] Morí d’un atac de cor el 1943 sense haver abandonat la interpretació.
