Descripció modifica

  • Pot arribar a fer 33 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 25).
  • 15-18 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 10-13 a l'anal.
  • És platejat amb la part dorsal de color verd oliva.[3][4]

Reproducció modifica

És ovípar amb larves i ous planctònics.[5]

Alimentació modifica

Menja sobretot eufausiacis i copèpodes.[6]

Depredadors modifica

A Sud-àfrica és depredat per Elops machnata, Argyrosomus hololepidotus, Atractoscion aequidens[7] i la palomida (Lichia amia); a Mèxic pel marlí ratllat (Tetrapturus audax)[8] i Makaira mazara;[9] i als Estats Units pel lluç argentat d'altura (Merluccius albidus),[10] Paralichthys dentatus, el tallahams (Pomatomus saltatrix),[11] Cynoscion regalis, Acanthocybium solandri,[12] Euthynnus alletteratus, Scomberomorus cavalla, Scomberomorus maculatus, Alopias superciliosus, el tauró sedós (Carcharhinus falciformis), Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, l'agullat (Squalus acanthias) i Mustelus canis.[13][14]

Hàbitat modifica

És un peix marí, pelàgic-nerític, oceanòdrom[15] i de clima subtropical (46°N-41°S, 28°E-51°W) que viu entre 0-150 m de fondària.[3][16]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

Es troba a l'Índic occidental (des de la frontera de Moçambic[17] fins a Durban, Sud-àfrica, i, probablement, més al sud), el mar Roig, la Mediterrània oriental,[18][19][20][21] l'Atlàntic occidental (des de la badia de Fundy i Nova Escòcia fins a Florida, el Golf de Mèxic, Veneçuela i les Guaianes), el Pacífic occidental (el Japó, el mar d'Arafura i les costes meridionals d'Austràlia) i el Pacífic oriental (des de Califòrnia -els Estats Units- fins a Xile, incloent-hi les illes Hawaii[22] i Galápagos).[3][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60]

Ús comercial modifica

Es comercialitza fresc, en salaó, en conserva i per a elaborar farina de peix.[61]

Observacions modifica

És inofensiu per als humans.[3]
