Descripció modifica

  • Pot arribar a fer 20 cm de llargària màxima.
  • 10 espines i 9 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 3 espines i 8 radis tous a l'anal.
  • El cos és marró i gris (més clar a la zona ventral), amb taques fosques irregulars i disperses.
  • Presenta sovint dues bandes fosques a sota de l'ull.
  • Les aletes són generalment translúcides. L'aleta caudal té franges clares i fosques.[5][6]

Reproducció modifica

És hermafrodita.[7]

Alimentació modifica

Menja petits invertebrats bentònics.[8]

Hàbitat modifica

És un peix marí, associat als esculls[9] i de clima tropical (30°N-25°S) que viu fins als 150 m de fondària.[5]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

Es troba des del mar Roig[10] i l'Àfrica Oriental[11][12][13][14] fins a les illes Ryukyu,[15] Nova Caledònia i Tonga.[16][5][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45]

Longevitat modifica

La seua esperança de vida és de 15 anys.[46]

Observacions modifica

És inofensiu per als humans i la carn dels exemplars més grossos és ben apreciada com a aliment.[5]
