Descripció modifica

  • Pot arribar a fer 90 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 60) i 850 g de pes.
  • 43-55 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 56-71 a l'anal.
  • 54-57 vèrtebres.[3][4][5]

Alimentació modifica

Els joves mengen eufausiacis i amfípodes, i, de tant en tant, copèpodes, cefalòpodes i peixets.[3]

Depredadors modifica

A les illes Malvines és depredat per Cottoperca gobio,[6] Lampris immaculatus,[7] Salilota australis, Bathyraja brachyurops i Bathyraja griseocauda; a Xile per Merluccius australis,[8] i a Nova Zelanda per Genypterus blacodes.[9][10][11]

Hàbitat modifica

És un peix d'aigua marina, bentopelàgic, oceanòdrom[12] i de clima temperat (37°S-65°S, 165°E-34°W), el qual viu entre 50 i 900 m de fondària[13] (normalment, entre 200 i 400) a la plataforma continental durant l'estiu i sobre el talús continental a l'hivern.[14][3]

Distribució geogràfica modifica

N'existeixen dues poblacions diferents: Micromesistius australis australis es troba a la Patagònia argentina,[15][16][17] Xile i les illes Malvines, Geòrgia del Sud, Shetland del Sud i Òrcades del Sud, mentre que Micromesistius australis pallidus és autòctona de l'illa sud de Nova Zelanda.[18][19][20][21][22][23][3][24][25][26][27][28]

Ús comercial modifica

És venut congelat i com a farina de peix, i es pot fregir, cuinar al forn microones o enfornar. Al Japó és emprat per a fer pastissos de peix.[29][30][3]

És inofensiu per als humans.[3]
