La Viquipèdia en català esdevé la primera enciclopèdia del món amb totes les biografies de la llista 100 Dones de la BBC de 2020

Un concurs impulsat pel grup autogestionat de Joves Viquipedistes ha permès aconseguir-ho en poc més d’una setmana.


La Viquipèdia en català ha esdevingut la primera versió lingüística en crear les 100 biografies que apareixen en la llista de dones més influents que elabora anualment la BBC i que enguany es va donar a conèixer el passat 23 de novembre. El grup de joves va impulsar el repte de crear totes les biografies entre el 27 de novembre i el 14 de desembre.

El projecte ha estat un èxit, ja que a la meitat del període establert tots els articles proposats (152) ja s'havien creat. Tot i això la feina ha continuat per millorar i ampliar els textos i afegir noves referències fins a donar una qualitat homogènia a les biografies. Pel que fa al nombre de biografies elaborades, a la Viquipèdia en català la segueix la versió en anglès amb 67 articles, seguida de la versió en francès amb 41, en alemany amb 32 i en castellà amb 30. Hi han participat 47 voluntaris i s’hi han creat no només totes les biografies de la llista de la BBC del 2020 sinó també les del 2019. En total s’hi han afegit unes 2700 referències, 100.000 paraules, 1600 kilobytes i 60 imatges.

El sistema per quantificar els punts ha tingut en compte tant el contingut afegit com les referències i els fitxers multimèdia. Els usuaris Beusson, Jordiventura96 (un jove de 24 anys i pertanyent al Grup Jove promotor del concurs) i Joutbis són els que hi han contribuït més generosament. Fins i tot una quinzena d'alumnes de batxillerat de l'Institut Fort Pius de Barcelona hi ha participat com a treball de classe de l'assignatura de Ciències del Món Contemporani.

Aquest concurs té com a objectiu abordar els biaixos de gènere i cultural a l'hora d'equilibrar el contingut biogràfic de la Viquipèdia. Les dones estan clarament infrarepresentades a la Viquipèdia, amb aproximadament 1 de cada 6 del total de biografies en tot l'àmbit interlingüístic mundial. L’edició en català ha impulsat diverses iniciatives al voltant del projecte Viquidones per aconseguir el 18,41% d’articles de dones actual, mentre que el juliol del 2016 només en tenia el 13,33%.

100 Dones és una sèrie multiformat de la BBC creada l'any 2013 que recull les 100 dones més influents del món de cada any. Una vegada es coneix el nom de les premiades, comença un programa a la BBC anomenat BBC's Women Season, de tres setmanes de durada i en el qual s'inclou una emissió i la difusió biogràfica de les premiades, programes en línia, debats i articles relacionats amb la visibilitzaió de les dones. La Viquipèdia, l’edició en català de l’enciclopèdia col·laborativa en línia, es va crear el 16 de març del 2001 i es va convertir en la primera Viquipèdia no anglesa que allotjava contingut amb el seu article sobre l'àbac (àbac). Amb més de 665.000 articles, actualment és la 20a Viquipèdia més gran mesurada pel nombre d’articles i la de màxima qualitat dels darrers 7 anys segons el rànquing intern que considera els 1.000 articles més essencials que hauria de tenir tota enciclopèdia. El projecte destaca per la seva comunitat d’edició, molt activa i que posa de manifest la presència en línia de la llengua catalana malgrat el seu estatus de llengua minoritzada.

The Catalan Wikipedia becomes the first encyclopedia to create all BBC 100 Women bios of 2019 and 2020, only in 10 days

Led by the self-managed group of young editors in this language, the project has boosted more than 150 new articles, 100,000 words and 2,500 sources in a little more than a week.


The Catalan Wikipedia (Viquipèdia) has been the first language to create all women’s biographies that are annually ranked as the most influential and inspiring by the BBC 100 Women initiative, and that this year was published on the 23rd November. An informal group of about 18 young wikipedians from 15 to 27 years old, who have gathered this year to strengthen bounds and improve budding welcome for new teenagers who start editing the Catalan free encyclopedia, promoted few days ago the challenge to create all BBC 100 Women biographies in this language between November 27 and December 14. And it has been a lightning success.

By the middle of the established period, all the proposed articles (152) were already created by 47 editors. However, the challenge is still ongoing to improve and expand as much as possible all women’s careers and add new reliable sources that homogenise their quality. At the time this news was released, the number of 2020’s biographies created in other languages follows Catalan (all 99; discarding the Unsung hero) with 67 articles in English, 41 in French, 32 in German, and 30 in Spanish. The contest has enhanced the creation not only of all biographies on the BBC list for 2020, but also those for 2019. A total of 2,500 references, 100,000 words, 1,500 kilobytes of text, and 56 images were added.

The system for quantifying the scores included for this challenge a new interface to allow newcomers of the project to easily track their edits. It has fully taken into account both added content but also its balance with bibliographic sources and media files included in the articles. The users Beusson, Jordiventura96 (the 24-year old main organiser) and Joutbis have been its most generous contributors. Up to 15 students from a Barcelona's high school (Institut Fort Pius) participated in the challenge as an e-learning activity.

This contest aims to address both gender and cultural bias in the free encyclopedia, and it is just a small part of the huge efforts made by Catalan-speaking wikipedians to equilibrate its biographic content towards a fairly representative for women all around the world. There is evidence that women are clearly underrepresented on Wikipedia, roughly 1 out of 6 in average among all linguistic domains. The Catalan edition has been consistently working through several initiatives packed around the project Wikiwomen (Viquidones) and has been able to reach the milestone of 30K (18.41%) women articles a few weeks ago, when in July 2016 just had roughly 15K (13.33%).

100 Women is a BBC multi-format series created in 2013 that yearly brings together the 100 most influential women in the world. Once the names of the winners are known, a three-week BBC program called BBC’s Women's Season begins, which includes a broadcast of the winners, online interviews, debates and articles related to women. The Catalan Wikipedia (in Catalan, Viquipèdia en català) is the Catalan-language edition of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia. It was created on March 16, 2001 and became the first non-English Wikipedia to host content with its article about the abacus (àbac). With more than 665,000 articles, it is currently the 20th-largest Wikipedia as measured by the number of articles and the top-quality one for the last 7 years according to the internal ranking that considers the most essential 1,000 articles that every encyclopedia should have. The project is most notable for its very active editing community, which illustrates the Catalan language’s online presence despite being a minoritised language.
