La filla de Jetró, Sèfora, es va convertir en l'esposa de Moisès després que [[Èxode|Moisès haguès fugit d'Egipte]], després d'haver matat un egipci que pegava un esclau hebreu. Havent fugit cap a Madian, Moisès va intervenir en una disputa per l'accés a l’aigua entre les set filles de Jetró i els pastors locals. En conseqüència, Jetró va convidar Moisès a casa seva i li va oferir hospitalitat. No obstant això, Moisès va ser conscient que era un desconegut a l'[[exili]], i va anomenar el seu primer fill (el nét de Jetró) [[Guerxom|Gerxom]] (''גֵּרְשֹׁם''), que significa ''«desconegut en aquests llocs»''.
Es diu que Moisès va treballar de pastor per Jetró durant 40 anys abans de tornar a Egipte per conduir els hebreus a [[Canaan]], la «Terra Promesa». Després de la batalla de [[Refidim]] contra els [[amalequites]], va arribar a Jetró la notícia que, sota la direcció de Moisès, els [[Tribus d'Israel|israelites]] havien fugit d'Egipte, de manera que es va dirigir a reunir-se amb Moisès.
