Tapestries were expensive and much prized. They could be hung floor-toceiling and edge-to-edge to provide insulationin a draughty room and they were a vehicle for decoration and narrative. This example shows hunting, a sport that was exclusive to the kings and aristocracy. The nobles wear costly silks and furs rather than practical hunting clothes. Very little costume survives from this period, but this tapestry gives a good indication of the extravagant fashions of the Burgundian court.
Accepted by HM Government in lieu of tax payable on the estate of the 10th Duke of Devonshire and allocated to the Victoria and Albert Museum
