modificaEls ponts són particularment difícil de classificar mentre ells, més d'altres estructures, és subjecte de portar, a compte de guerra i l'impacte d'elements naturals. La necessitat constant per les reparacions a través de les edats ha sovint va girar ponts a estructures híbrides, fent-lo sovint difícil o gairebé impossible de determinar la data exacta i origen de parts individuals d'un pont. Així, la majoria de ponts va llistar a sota pot ser assumit per incloure medieval o (primerenc) modificacions modernes, substitucions o extensions, a una extensió petita o gran.

modificaUn timber el pont és una estructura va compondre completament fora de fusta, mentre un pont de pilar de la pedra presenta una superestructura de fusta que descansa damunt pilars de pedra. En rigor, molts ponts del segon tipus haurien de ser força ponts "de pilar concrets cridats", mentre els Romans preferentment van utilitzar opus caementicium per construir el seu pont piers (la pedra va ser limitada en aquests casos a cobertura). Ambdós tipus, timber ponts i pedra respectivament ponts de pilar concret, és llistat aquí en la mateixa categoria mentre històricament, amb la consolidació de poder Romà en el novament va conquerir províncies, els ponts de fusta sovint van donar manera a ponts de pilar sòlid.

Pontoon Ponts
modificaMentre un alternatiu a serveis de transbordador, l'exèrcit Romà ús fet sovint de pontoon ponts, juntament amb timber estructures, per encreuaments de riu. Ells normalment consistit de barques lashed junt, amb els llaços que assenyalen cap al corrent. Els ponts permanents de barques eren també generalment instal·lat per trànsit de civil.
