S'ha proposat anomenar aquesta unitat dalton, símbol Da, en honor a [[John Dalton]], l'autor de la [[teoria atòmica]].<ref>{{GEC|0095712}}</ref> S’utilitza sovint en [[bioquímica]] i [[biologia molecular]].
