Aconseguí fugir a França, en esdevingué ministre d'exterior del Pretendent. Va ser jutjat per traïció; però el 1723 va poder tornar a Anglaterra. És conegut principalment com el filòsof del [[Partit del País (Regne Unit)|Partit del País]] (el ''Country Party'').
