Descripció modifica

  • Fa 18 cm de llargària màxima.[7]
  • 3 espines i 43-45 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 1 espina i 39-42 radis tous a l'anal.
  • El mascle presenta filaments llargs a l'aleta dorsal.[8]
  • Absència d'escates per sobre i per sota de la línia lateral a la meitat anterior del cos.[9][10]

Reproducció modifica

Viu en harems (1 mascle per, si fa no fa, una dotzena de femelles).[3]

Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica modifica

És un peix marí, associat als vessants dels esculls costaners i les llacunes fondes entre 10 i 30 m de fondària[7] i de clima subtropical, el qual viu a l'oceà Índic occidental (les illes Maldives)[11] i el Pacífic occidental (des d'Indonèsia[12][8][13][14] fins a Fiji,[12][15] les illes Ryukyu[16][17][18][19] i el mar del Corall,[20] incloent-hi Guam,[12] les illes Marshall,[12] la Micronèsia,[12] la república de Palau[12] i Papua Nova Guinea).[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][4][10]

Observacions modifica

És inofensiu per als humans[10] i, normalment, es colga en la sorra quan l'aigua esdevé calma.[8]
